Traditional African drumming has become an integral part of life at Greenbrier Academy for Girls
Each day the community unites together and plays some favorite rhythms. This experience helps create opportunities for students to mentor and teach one another and share in a common activity. More than just a fun experience, drumming also has a profound therapeutic effect:
“Research reviews indicate that drumming enhances recovery through inducing relaxation and enhancing theta-wave production and brain-wave synchronization. Drumming produces pleasurable experiences, enhanced awareness of preconscious dynamics, release of emotional trauma, and reintegration of self.
Drumming alleviates self-centeredness, isolation, and alienation, creating a sense of connectedness with self and others. The Performance Group has garnered critical acclaim and is often invited to perform at local and regional events and local venues.
In March of 2013, they were asked to perform for the opening session of the West Virginia State Legislature.
They blew the house (pun intended) away and received a roaring standing ovation.
