Understanding Addictions

14508524_SUnderstanding how addictions work and how they start is very important in order to put them to an end. There are many different types of addictions, and they can range from involving drugs, shopping, sex, and just about anything else. Even something that is typically harmless and even essential for most people, like eating food, can become a dangerous addiction for certain people. At Greenbrier Academy, our hope is that the more our students and their parents understand about addictions, the easier it will be to deal with them and ultimately break them.

There are many ways in which addictions can start. Sometimes they begin because a person feels negatively about themselves, and relies on an addiction to mask those thoughts. In other cases, addictions are simply a product of the environment someone lives in. Maybe they aren’t getting the support they need, or they turn to something that’s comforting during a trying time. This comfort can then become a crutch that they need in order to simply get through the day.

Whether an addiction begins because of a certain relationship someone has with themselves or others, or because of their environment, they never truly solve anything. Understanding that is key when it comes to beating an addiction. Once someone can understand that their addiction is not actually getting rid of their pain, but instead temporarily hiding it, the path to recovery is a little easier.

People often become addicted to something because they are going through a tough time in their life, and that addiction just makes things tougher, perpetuating the problem. We’re here to help break that cycle, and we want nothing but the best for each of our students and their families. To find out how we can help you, please get in touch with us.
