Greenbrier Academy for Girls is committed to providing life-changing transformations for troubled teens. We do this through therapeutic programs that use our concept of Strong Relationality, equine therapy programs and a powerful aspiration-based campus culture. In addition, we offer something special four weeks out of our 12-month year. For one week every quarter, every student experiences the Village retreat.

What is the Village?

Most Greenbrier graduates would agree that the Village is one of the most impactful experiences at our West Virginia boarding school for girls. Set on the campus, but away from the main facility on a nearby mountaintop, it provides an opportunity for deep-level change, clarity and healing.
Before the Village, I was heading down a bad path. It was unhealthy, and I wasn’t whole. The Village really brought out the real side of me. Without the Village, I don’t think that side of me would have ever been discovered.

The Village helps facilitate change. Teens who come to our West Virginia boarding school can often feel ‘stuck’ in their current life. This feeling of being stuck often shows up in different forms, including:
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • ADHD
  • Post-Traumatic Stress
  • Fears of Abandonment
  • Eating Disorders
  • Poor Body Image
  • Low Self-Esteem
The Village experience provides that turning point that helps students get unstuck. It’s a place of healing, but also of revelation. The students learn how to create change in their lives, starting with changing how they view certain experiences from their past. They can then use this new information to start down the right path toward a brighter future.

What Does The Village Offer?

Have you ever asked yourself, “What is the meaning of all of this?” During the Village, the girls of Greenbrier get to ask these tough questions and more, including:
  • Who am I?
  • Where does love come from?
  • Can I get love if I don’t have it?
  • What is right?
  • How do I get rid of this emotional pain?
Throughout the experience, the girls learn the answers to these questions based on intriguing philosophies and cultures.
The Village is all about experiencing these questions and helping the girls learn how to answer them for themselves. During this retreat, they’ll also focus on their own purpose and their relationships with themselves and others. They’ll learn what type of meaning they want their life to have.

In addition, the girls participate in several therapeutic activities, including drumming and exercise. Through these practices, they’ll learn how to balance their body and mind. They’ll also become more open to relationships and enhance their awareness of internal dynamics. Both practices also help them access a higher power and connect with others. Since many of the girls arriving at Greenbrier feel isolated, alone and powerless, these are essential steps. They help the girls connect with others and connect with God or their higher power.
