Greenbrier Academy’s Response to Coronavirus

First and foremost, our thoughts and prayers are with each and every one of you. We know how difficult this situation is and knowing that inspires our Greenbrier Community to maintain a high continuity of care for your daughters, both emotionally and physically.

As always, and perhaps more so given these stressful times, Greenbrier serves as a safe refuge for your daughters to receive necessary care and education. For families, we offer peace of mind in knowing your daughters are safe and cared for within our isolated campus.

We are fortunate to be located in a less populated, extremely remote area that has no reported cases. That said, we are not naive to the ease of contracting this virus and have been following the guidelines proposed by our local health department and the CDC.

Safety Measures

Our Greenbrier staff responded early to the risks by implementing the following protective protocols and procedures:

  • We have implemented strategic testing as a requirement. Our county Health Department is available to us for testing at a minimum of 3 days a week, either through their testing center or their drive-by station.

  • Upon entering campus, all staff are filtered through a designated area that is away from students. Here, they immediately wash their hands, have their temperatures taken and are evaluated for any signs or symptoms of the virus. All staff are required to be strategically tested as needed per our Medical Director’s recommendation.

  • We have temporarily restricted all non-family visitors to our program and discontinued onsite tours.

  • Any current family visit is entirely off-campus, limited in number, requires approval and follows strict protocols. Students returning from a weekend area visit will be tested and placed in quarantine until her test has come back negative; approximately for 2-3 days.

  • We are utilizing virtual tours for families looking for placement

  • We have implemented a virtual Family/Daughter program in lieu of our on-campus Family Workshops

  • We have cancelled all home visits to limit exposure to our campus. This policy will be revisited on a monthly basis.

  • At this time, graduations will still be held virtually for parents as we continue to restrict visitors from campus

  • We have educated staff and students about reporting symptoms, covering sneezes and coughs, disinfecting surface areas, washing hands with soap and water frequently and avoiding face touching

  • Our in-house nurse assesses girls and staff daily for symptoms per CDC and USDH protocols. If someone does not pass this screening, they will be supported per CDC and USDH standards, quarantined, tested and if indicated, receive medical intervention until cleared by a physician.

  • We continue to monitor the directives and guidelines given by the CDC and WHO, as well as the West Virginia DHHR, local hospitals and emergency service units

Admissions Procedures

  • We are currently accepting admissions of students who:

    • Currently come from residential, inpatient or wilderness programs and are symptom free with no in-hospital exposure to confirmed cases of COVID-19

    • Are able to drive to Greenbrier Academy for Girls or have access to private plane service so as to avoid higher risk and potential exposure at commercial airports

  • New students will be tested through our county Health Department testing centers and placed in quarantine until her test has come back negative; approximately for 2-3 days.

  • We have designated a specific team for new admissions that will not work on the main campus with current students as well as an isolated location

  • During their quarantine, students will have virtual therapy sessions with their on-campus therapist and access to their academic courses via Zoom meetings and hard copy materials

We will be updating this page on a regular basis as the Coronavirus situation unfolds.
