What is Neurofeedback Therapy?
Neurofeedback therapy is a non-invasive, drug-free way to retrain brain function and restore optimal functionality. Through a series of sessions, most girls will find relief from symptoms such as: behavior disorders, anxiety, ADD, ADHD, depression, insomnia and trauma. When used within a larger therapeutic context such as ours, it is particularly effective.

How does Neurofeedback work?
Neurofeedback therapy involves a computer-based program that provides immediate feedback on brainwave activity. It uses a reward-based system through video and sound to steer brainwaves toward a more desirable state.
After completing several assessment tests and a brain-mapping session with your daughter, we can correlate specific brainwave patterns to likely symptoms. During treatment, we target those patterns by rewarding the desired state until it becomes second nature.
For example, if your daughter suffers from anxiety, we will see specific activity in the related brainwave activity through her brain-mapping session and assessment tests. We can then use her favorite movie as a training device in the neurofeedback loop. As the sensors pick up more controlled activity in the associated brain wave, the movie will start to play. If the pattern steers off course, the movie will become darker, the sound lower, or it may stop playing altogether until the more desired patterns restart.
Over the course of several sessions, your daughter will learn to self-regulate her brainwave pattern automatically. Like any exercise, it takes practice for it to become second nature. Once it does, studies have shown the changes are permanent as new pathways have been formed in the brain.
How will it help my daughter?
When used as an adjunct therapy to our immersive therapeutic program, neurofeedback therapy is a powerful tool for change.
At Greenbrier, your daughter is immersed in a supportive community of sisters and a therapeutic model that connects her academic, therapeutic and residential life. Her entire experience at Greenbrier revolves around identifying, removing and replacing the false beliefs that are the root cause of her symptoms.
Neurofeedback therapy allows her to actually target and re-train the brainwaves associated with these false beliefs.

Is Neurofeedback a requirement of the program?
Our neurofeedback program is not required, but we strongly suggest adding it to your daughter’s experience with us at Greenbrier. As stated above, we have added this element to our program as a way to enhance and guide her already transformative journey.
Meet Our Neurofeedback Team
Dr. Todd Woodward
Dr. Todd Woodward oversees our entire Neurofeedback Program at Greenbrier. He specializes in the treatment of ADHD and Autism and his program has 40+ years of research to prove its efficacy. Dr. Todd has successfully removed harmful medications from kids’ daily routines, while reducing or eliminating their associated symptoms.
Dr. Todd has a passion for treating ADHD and Autism, which stems from his own struggles with ADHD. He has helped so many children and adults, but he says it’s his mission/desire to help at least 250,000 people in his lifetime. A lofty goal!
Dr. Todd graduated from the Western States Chiropractic College and received his Neurological Dysregulation Certification from the University of Bridgeport College of Chiropractic. He is also Advanced Certified in QEEG (brain mapping), and a certified Interactive Metronome Trainer.
Misty joined Greenbrier Academy as a Residential Advisor in 2017. She believes that she has gained a better understanding of empathy, forgiveness and connection that she has been able to apply in her own daily life since beginning work here. Her life’s passion has always been to reach out and help those who are less fortunate.
In her spare time, she enjoys the adventures of the outdoors with her family and friends; horseback riding through the beautiful WV countryside, kayaking the Greenbrier River and camping.
She has been certified as a Neurofeedback technician, and her goal is to be the best role model possible for the girls and help them reach their full potential for life experiences.
Jessica joined the Greenbrier team in 2012 as a Residential advisor. She enjoyed being a role model to the girls so much that, after leaving in 2014 to care for her daughter, she returned to her position in 2017. It was then that she was offered her current position of Assistant Medical Coordinator.
“As the assistant to the medical coordinator I am passionate about the girls being comfortable and safe,” says Jessica. “I feel the girls enjoy spending time with me when I am transporting them to appointments as they are very open and honest with me. I feel that this is more than a job, it is building relationships and connections just like a family. This has also helped me in having patience and guidance with my own daughter.”
Jessica has completed an Associate’s degree from University of Phoenix in Health Care Administration and Medical Records. She has obtained certification in medical terminology and been trained in Therapeutic Crisis intervention.
In her spare time, she enjoys various outdoor activities and going to the beach as much as possible with her family. She loves to watch her daughter play sports and is always the loudest parent cheering her on.
She says, “My life has been changed in so many positive ways working here at GBA that I have truly been blessed.”
"Neurofeedback has helped me a lot. Since I started neurofeedback my concentration has improved immensely. I have been able to concentrate far better on my assignments and in class or conversations. I used to have pretty bad anxiety and I have been more calm and able to remain less anxious in situations that in the past I would not have been able to. My irritability and anger has improved as well. Smaller things irritate me far less than they used to and I can control my anger much better now. I am very grateful for neurofeedback and all that it has helped me with."
